Mosquito control Charlotte North Carolina, with its moist, humid conditions offers a challenge for pest control due to its temperate climate. To learn more about what attracts mosquitoes to your yard in the Charlotte area continue reading below.

Standing Water

The best way to avoid having a cloud of mosquitoes outside of your home is prevention. Mosquitoes need water to lay their eggs in order to reproduce. Eliminating standing water sources around your home when possible also eliminates the breeding ground for pesky mosquitoes.

Potted plants with water trays under them provide all that water necessary for mosquitoes. Monitor your potted plants and water container for activity in the form of “wrigglers”, which are hatched mosquito eggs called larvae. These larvae rapidly mature throughout the lifecycle to become fully mature and begin breeding very quickly.

Unkempt Properties

Be sure to trim overgrown areas of your property containing tall grasses and weeds. These areas retain moisture and can also act as a breeding ground for pests. Eliminating overgrown plant material allows the sun to reach the ground and dry up possible pools of water that mosquitoes can easily breed.

Additionally, if there are any used tires, buckets, or unused containers sitting around your yard, you will want to empty and dispose of unused items. Remember to clean out rain gutters of debris as well. When using kiddie pools, be sure to empty the pool of water and turn it upside down so as to not attract egg-laying mosquitoes.

Intentional Water Features

If your property contains a water feature such as a reflecting or koi pond, consider using a product to treat the water, making it inhospitable to larvae. There are animal-safe products on the market available for use in ponds containing live animals and water grasses. Be sure to treat the water on a regular basis for effective pest control.

Hire A Professional

If you are not a do-it-yourself type, consider hiring a professional to tackle the job. There are treatments available on the market today that control mosquito populations without harming beneficial pollinators such as bees and butterflies. Many companies offer to return between scheduled treatments if pests including mosquitoes return sooner, being a potential cost saver versus doing the pest control yourself.
